Laptop won't turn on?
"Dead" covers a lot of ground. A laptop that shows nothing at all is a different problem from one that lights up and stays black, and the second one is usually the cheaper of the two. We diagnose it first and tell you which you've got before anything gets ordered or opened.
Three different kinds of "won't turn on"
- No lights, no fan, nothing — usually power delivery: the adapter, the charging port, or the battery.
- Lights and fans come on, screen stays black — the machine is running; the display path or the RAM is the suspect.
- It starts, then shuts straight back off — often heat, or a battery that can't hold long enough to boot.
- It reaches a logo and stops — that's a software or drive problem, not a power one, and your files are usually fine.
Worth trying before you drive over
- Hold the power button down for a full 30 seconds with the charger unplugged, then plug in and try again.
- Try a different outlet, and check the adapter brick's light if it has one.
- Look at the charging port with a light — a loose or tilted plug is something we see constantly.
- If the screen is black but you hear fans, shine a flashlight at the screen at an angle. A faint image means the backlight, not the whole display.
What we do when you bring it in
We test power delivery before we open anything — adapter, port, battery — because that is where most of these end. If power is fine, we move to display and memory. You get told what it is and what it costs to fix before any work starts, in plain English.
Straight answer
If it's the adapter, that's an inexpensive fix and you should know that before you start shopping for a new laptop. Plenty of machines that come in "dead" leave the same week. We'll also tell you plainly when a repair isn't worth it against the age of the machine — that conversation is free and happens before you commit to anything.

- Computer Repair — problems people bring us every week
