Laptop overheating or shutting itself off

A laptop that shuts itself off under load is protecting itself from heat. Most of the time the cause is dust in the cooling path and old thermal paste — not a failing part — and it's one of the more satisfying things to fix.

Why it gets worse here specifically

Southwest Florida runs humid and we run air conditioning most of the year, which moves a lot of fine dust. Laptops pull that through the same fins that carry heat away. A machine that was quiet two summers ago can be roaring now without anything having broken.

What it looks like

What a cleaning involves

Opening the machine, clearing the heatsink and fan properly, and replacing the thermal paste between the chip and the cooler — which dries out over the years and stops transferring heat. Blowing canned air into the vent from outside mostly moves dust deeper in.

Straight answer

Not all of it is dust. Some thin laptops simply run hot by design and always did, and a cleaning won't change their character — we'll tell you if that's what you have rather than take the job twice. Raising the back of the laptop an inch for airflow costs nothing and genuinely helps.
