Laptop won't charge
Three parts have to cooperate for a laptop to charge, and any one of them failing looks identical from the outside. The good news is you can narrow it down at home in about two minutes.
The three suspects
- The adapter — the most common, and the least expensive. Bricks fail, and so do the thin cables where they flex.
- The charging port — loose, wobbly, or needing the plug held at an angle. Physical, and repairable.
- The battery — holds less every year by design. Below a certain point it stops accepting a charge at all.
Narrow it down before you come in
- Does the laptop run with the charger in but die instantly when you unplug it? That's the battery.
- Does wiggling the plug make the charging light flicker on and off? That's the port.
- Does a known-good adapter of the same type work? Then it was the adapter — and you're done.
- Is the brick hot, buzzing, or is the cable kinked near the plug? Suspect the adapter first.
Bring the charger with the laptop
It's half the system, and we can't test the charging path without it. If you have a spare that fits, bring both — it saves a step.
Straight answer
Batteries wearing out is normal, not a fault. A five-year-old laptop holding half its original charge is behaving as designed, and whether that's worth replacing depends entirely on how you use the machine — if it lives on a desk plugged in, it may not be worth anything at all.
