Cracked or broken laptop screen
A cracked screen looks like the end of a laptop and usually isn't. The panel is a part — it comes off and a new one goes on — and everything behind it, including your files, is typically untouched.
What we see most
- Spider cracks from a knock or a drop, or from something left on the keyboard when the lid closed.
- Black screen with the machine clearly running — sometimes the panel, sometimes the cable behind the hinge.
- Lines, bands, or a section that has gone dark.
- Flickering that changes when you move the lid — that's usually the cable, and it's the cheaper of the two.
How to tell if it's really the screen
Plug the laptop into an external monitor or a TV with an HDMI cable. If the picture on the external screen is perfect, the machine is fine and the problem is the panel or its cable. That single test rules out most of the expensive possibilities, and you can do it at home before you bring it in.
Your files are not the issue here
A screen replacement doesn't touch the drive. Nothing on the machine gets wiped or moved to change a panel — you get the laptop back exactly as you left it, with a screen you can see.
Straight answer
On an older laptop, a screen can cost enough relative to the machine that replacing the whole thing makes more sense. We'll quote the screen and say so plainly if that's the situation — and if the external-monitor test above shows a perfect picture, plenty of people just use it that way at a desk and skip the repair entirely.
