No sound coming from your computer?
Silence is almost never the speakers themselves. It's usually Windows talking to the wrong device, a driver an update replaced, or a mute setting nobody remembers touching. Worth two minutes of checking before you assume the worst.
Check these before anything else
- The output device — Windows may be sending sound to a monitor, a Bluetooth speaker, or a headset that isn't actually connected right now.
- The physical mute switch or key — some laptops have one on the side or in the function row, easy to bump.
- Volume mixer settings per app — a browser or a specific program can be muted independently of the system volume.
- A loose or partly-inserted headphone jack, which can trick the computer into thinking headphones are plugged in when they're not.
When it's an update, not a fault
Audio drivers are one of the things a Windows update most often disturbs. If the sound worked yesterday and stopped after updates ran overnight, that's the first place to look — and it's a software fix, not a hardware one.
When it's genuinely the hardware
- Sound works through headphones but not the built-in speakers — suspect the speakers themselves, or the wiring to them.
- Bluetooth pairs and shows connected but plays nothing — often the Bluetooth adapter's driver rather than the speaker.
- A crackling or popping sound that gets worse over time — worth having looked at before it fails completely.
Straight answer
If sound works fine through headphones or a different set of speakers, the computer is doing its job and the problem is downstream — plugged into the wrong output, or an external speaker that needs its own volume checked or its own charging. Don't pay anyone to fix a computer that already works.
