Stuck on a Windows update
Windows updates are supposed to look alarming for a while — a black screen, a spinning circle, a percentage that barely moves. Most of the time that's normal. The question is how long is too long, and what's safe to do while you wait.
Slow versus actually stuck
- Big feature updates can genuinely take over an hour, especially on a machine with a slower or nearly-full drive.
- A percentage that's climbing, even slowly, is usually still working. Leave it.
- The same percentage, unchanged, for several hours with no disk activity light — that's stuck.
- A restart loop, where it reboots, tries again, and fails the same way repeatedly, is stuck in a different, more urgent way.
What not to do
Don't pull the power in the first hour, and don't hold the power button because it "seems frozen." Interrupting an update mid-write is how a slow update becomes a genuinely broken one. If it's been stuck with no disk activity for several hours, that's the point where forcing a restart becomes reasonable rather than risky.
If it won't recover on its own
Windows usually tries to roll the update back automatically if it can't complete, and most machines recover to where they were before. When that rollback itself fails, or the machine won't get past the same screen after a forced restart, that's when it's worth bringing in — before more restart attempts make the drive's condition harder to read.
Straight answer
A slow update is not a broken computer, and most of what looks alarming resolves on its own within an hour or two. Where it stops being patience and starts being a real problem is a genuine stuck screen with no disk activity for several hours, or a restart loop that repeats more than two or three times — that's worth a diagnosis, not another restart.
